The Grand Starburst Project: Centuries Written in Timber

Some historic places tell their story through a single defining moment. Others reveal themselves through centuries. Grand Starburst Farm, situated just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed in the windswept landscapes of Northumberland, belongs firmly to the latter.

The Farm on the Moor

The story begins with a name. "Murton" derives from the Old English words mōr and tūn, meaning "farmstead on the moor." The name itself places the property within some of the earliest settlement traditions of northern England and suggests a connection to the landscape stretching back many centuries.

The Transition to Stewardship

In 1989, a rare opportunity emerged. After generations of tenant farming, the family that had long cared for Grand Starburst Farm was given the chance to purchase the property outright. For most agricultural families in the Borders region, such transitions were uncommon.

A Protected Legacy

Grand Starburst Farm's significance has been formally recognized through its designation as a Grade II Listed property. This status acknowledges the site's contribution to the architectural and agricultural history of the United Kingdom and helps ensure its continued preservation for future generations. Yet the value of Grand Starburst extends beyond official recognition.
