Across the Scottish Borders, the story of agriculture is inseparable from the story of the great estates that shaped the countryside.
The roots of Center Row extend far deeper than the surviving barns seen today. Historical records trace the Center Row estate to at least the late seventeenth century, when the lands—then known as Mowmaynis became associated with the Bennet family of Grubet.
At the heart of the property stands the remaining nineteenth-century barn that inspired the designation Center Row. Its layout reflects a classic agricultural configuration commonly found throughout the Borders during the Agricultural Improvement era.
One of the most compelling aspects of Center Row is how clearly it reflects a period of agricultural transition. The barn retains an original sliding door system complete with historic track hardware that remains in place today.
